"It was rutting season and I was watching this powerful male buffalo from the safety of my car as he went down to wallow in a pit. He emerged in a cloud of dust, matted in mud and grass. He was bellowing excitedly, drooling and with his eyes rolling, challenging the other males around. I was admiring his curly coat and mighty horns thinking that would make a great painting when he suddenly rushed out of his pit, going straight toward me, tail raised and kicking like crazy. I sat very still, praying that he would not crush my car. He finally veered and passed by only an inch, making the car shake (or maybe that was me?). It’s an encounter that was engraved in my memory and in that piece I wanted to show the raw power and glory of this bison as I experienced it that day."
