A Cape petrel playing in the waves.
The Cape petrel is a common seabird from the southern hemisphere easily identifiable with its contrasted "painted" black and white plumage. When fully grown, their wings span 34" and they are around 15" long. Their diet is mostly crustaceans which they obtain by surface seizing as well as diving under water and filtering them out. That is why they have what is called a salt gland (situated above the nasal passage) that helps desalinate their bodies.
