Wildebeests crossing the Mara river in clouds of dust.
Every year in Africa, more than 1.5 million wildebeest migrate across the Serengeti in Tanzania and into the Masai Mara in Kenya in search of fresh grazing pastures. It's the largest mass-movement of land mammals on the planet—and the thunderous charge is nowhere more hectic than at the Mara river, where the thousands and thousands of animals are forced to converge in order to cross to the other side while trying to avoid the crocodiles or simply drowning. Although it is commonly assumed that this is simply a frenzy and that the wildebeest cross blindly, recent research has shown that a herd of gnu possesses what is known as a “swarm intelligence”, whereby the animals systematically explore and overcome the obstacle as one. The herd succeeds based on collective trial and error and with enough followers the herd is bound to succeed.
