A Canada goose and gosling enjoying the green grass.
Canada geese build their nest on the ground, close to water. The eggs (between 5 and 7) are incubated for 25-28 days and the family leave the nest on foot not long after the hatching to go to the feeding grounds in fields or along riverbeds (adults lose their flight feathers during their annual summer molt at this period). Goslings stay with their protective parents till next spring.
As the annual summer molt also takes place during the breeding season, the adults lose their flight feathers for 20–40 days, regaining flight about the same time as their goslings start to fly.[28]
