A mountain lion perched on a rocky ledge under a sky on fire.
The cougar (also know as puma or moutain lion) is an ambush predator and prefers habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking. From Canada to the southern Andes, the cat can adapt to virtually every habitat and is found in all forest types, as well as in lowland and mountainous deserts. The cougar was extirpated across much of its eastern North American range because of intensive hunting, today it is still vulnerable due to the fragmentation of its habitat.
